US-based fund administrator 4Pines Fund Services has appointed former insurance and healthcare executive Brian Sciortino as its new chief operating officer. The firm announced the move exclusively to FinTech Futures, noting that Sciortino has returned from retirement to take the role. He brings over 30 years of experience from companies including MetLife and Versant Health, where he served as CEO before leaving in 2023.
Sciortino describes the transition as an unconventional career move. Since leaving corporate America three years ago, he worked as a school bus driver. “I loved it, it actually almost broke my heart to leave,” he told the publication. However, he said the opportunity made sense and arrived at the right time.
Sciortino acknowledges that his previous work in a Fortune 50 insurance environment does not translate well to the pace of a growing startup. Sitting in a room with just four or five decision-makers was a key factor in the decision to join 4Pines. He is now overseeing an operations team of roughly 80 people and focuses on setting clear performance outcomes for every level of staff.
While fund administration is a different industry, Sciortino argues the core components of operational leadership remain identical. He plans to establish a culture of internal ownership and accountability by measuring performance and tracking KPIs. Mike Trinkaus views this hiring as a step toward disciplined scaling as the company crosses the 100-person mark.
Breaking the black box
Trinkaus argues that the traditional fund administration sector creates a barrier between the administrator and the client. He describes the industry as operating in a “black box” that hides fund details from managers. To meet modern expectations, 4Pines aims to move away from this isolated service model toward genuine operational partnership. Trinkaus believes the wider administration industry faces a challenge to evolve past legacy infrastructure. The firm is prioritizing a collaborative approach to connect personnel and technology without disruption. The outgoing COO, Bob Chowaniec, is assisting with the handoff.
