Monmouthshire County Council is creating a Road Safety Strategy focused on enhancing journey safety for all residents, workers, and visitors in the county. This initiative, spanning the years 2026 through 2040, will build on recent advancements and outline collaborative efforts with partners to mitigate road dangers by addressing safer speeds, infrastructure, vehicle standards, road user behavior, and coordinated partnerships.

Reducing Serious Injuries

Road fatalities or serious injuries in Monmouthshire dropped from 63 in 2021 to 42 in 2024. Nevertheless, the council acknowledges the profound impact each collision can have on individuals, families, and communities. The strategy will expand upon ongoing educational and engagement initiatives currently underway throughout the county.

During the last year, approximately 800 young participants completed Child Pedestrian Training, while around 650 Year 6 pupils engaged in transition workshops emphasizing road safety awareness and safe commutes to secondary school. Additionally, 300 pupils finished cycling safety courses, roughly 100 sixth-form and college students participated in DOMINO pre-driving presentations, and the council implemented 25 Active Travel School Plans within the last three years. Since early 2025, approximately 85 school route assessments have been conducted to ensure safe pathways between homes and schools.

Special focus will be directed toward vulnerable road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, and individuals aged 16 to 25. The strategy plans initiatives targeting a minimum 40% reduction in fatalities or serious injuries among this group by 2040.

Cllr Catrin Maby, Monmouthshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Climate Change and the Environment, stated: “Everyone should be able to travel around Monmouthshire safely and confidently. While the figures show progress, we know there is more to do to prevent serious injuries and protect people using our roads. Our new strategy will provide a clear, evidence-led approach, helping us focus investment, education and practical improvements where they are most needed. Residents’ experiences and local knowledge will be an important part of shaping this work.”
