Every trip involves some unforeseen and unnecessary complexity. The chip in a passport might go on strike, or the airport might overwhelm passengers with Disneyworld-grade crowd control before they even reach passport control. Travel is rarely smooth, but one recent journey proved the old adage that there is a story in every failure.
The Wrong Bag
The traveler checked a bag for the first time in years, carrying a specific dread of what might go wrong. A past incident involving a pallet of frozen Norwegian salmon blocking a plane’s exit had already cemented this anxiety. Now, the app showed the correct conveyor belt number, the board displayed the same information, and the sign above the belt read “Athens flight: bags delivered.” Yet, the bag was nowhere to be found.
The staff directed the passenger to a machine, which timed out three times. Behind them, a family from Nice complained about bags that never arrived because the airline had forced them to check in last minute. The human agent eventually sent the traveler to a different belt. “Geneva,” the belt announced. The traveler knew they were not coming from Geneva, but there, unmistakably and blindingly orange, was their own bag spinning merrily.

Coordination Failure
The bag arrived home with the traveler, though its contents remain a mystery. While the story could have been framed as a failure of digital transformation or system integration, the reality is more direct. The airport’s various systems—the display boards, the app, and the staff’s private knowledge—operated in silos. The information that the bag was on belt six existed somewhere, but the infrastructure failed to get it to the passenger.
This disconnect is a classic organizational problem where the “source of truth” is siloed in a single person’s head rather than a centralized system. When systems are not integrated or updated in real time, the result is exactly what happened here: passengers are sent in circles while the correct information sits in a clipboard or a supervisor’s office. The technology to link these disparate points of data often exists, but the architecture to prioritize and distribute that information accurately is missing.
It is a cry for better orchestration. If machines are going to replace human roles, they should start with the tasks humans are clearly worst at: coordinating large-scale logistics and maintaining real-time data consistency across multiple channels. The traveler returned home with a bag that wasn’t theirs, and a clear understanding that getting information from one place to another is still too difficult for most organizations.
