Live Oak exec says AI accelerates, not strategy

Live Oak Bank is testing a model that pairs industry‑specific expertise with artificial intelligence, aiming to shrink loan processing from more than three months to roughly two weeks while keeping a personal touch.

Specialization drives the bank’s growth

When the institution launched, it limited its portfolio to veterinary practices, a niche that allowed the team to learn the cash‑flow patterns and risk factors unique to that field. Over time the bank expanded into about 40 verticals, from dental offices to construction firms, and now ranks first among all SBA 7(a) lenders by dollar volume. The expansion happened without a single brick‑and‑mortar branch; staff travel nationwide to sit across the table from borrowers.

AI as an accelerant, not a roadmap

In a recent interview, BJ Losch, the bank’s president, explained that artificial intelligence is being layered onto existing processes to speed up routine tasks, not to replace the strategic focus on vertical expertise. He noted that the technology can automate data entry, document verification and initial risk scoring, freeing loan officers to concentrate on relationship building and subtle judgment. “AI helps us move the needle on efficiency,” Losch said, emphasizing that final credit decisions still rest with humans who understand borrower context.

The bank’s target is a two‑week loan‑to‑close timeline, a sharp contrast to the industry average that often exceeds 100 days. To achieve that, the firm is redesigning workflow steps, using AI to flag missing items, suggest next actions, and route files to the appropriate specialist.

While the technology handles repetitive work, Losch draws a hard line at letting algorithms dictate approval outcomes. He argues that trust and accountability hinge on human insight, especially when dealing with small businesses that may have irregular revenue streams or seasonal spikes. “We can’t let a model decide without a person looking at the whole picture,” he remarked.

The bank’s high‑touch model also means that its staff must stay informed about industry trends. This approach aligns with the firm’s belief that deep sector knowledge, combined with scalable technology, creates a competitive edge.

One can see parallels with other niche lenders that have adopted digital tools while preserving a personal service ethos. Those that leaned too heavily on automation without retaining sector expertise often struggled to differentiate themselves, leading to higher churn rates. Live Oak’s strategy of using AI to amplify, rather than replace, its vertical focus seems designed to avoid that pitfall.

Regulatory compliance remains a priority. The bank’s compliance team works with the AI developers to embed the latest guidelines into the system, ensuring that any automated scoring respects lending laws and fair‑credit practices. Losch says that the bank conducts regular audits of the AI outputs to spot any unintended bias.

The rollout is still in phases. Some verticals have fully integrated the AI‑enhanced workflow, while others are piloting the tools alongside traditional processes. The bank plans to evaluate performance metrics quarterly and adjust the deployment based on results.

Looking ahead, Losch believes the next step is to use AI for predictive analytics, helping small businesses anticipate cash‑flow needs before they arise. However, he cautions that such forward‑looking models will still require human validation to ensure they reflect real‑world conditions.

As of the latest reporting, Live Oak Bank has processed over $30 billion in SBA loans since its inception, a figure that shows the scalability of its model when technology and specialization are combined thoughtfully.
