Energy Infrastructure ETFs Rally in October

Energy infrastructure ETFs rebounded in October, recovering from September’s interest-rate volatility. Strong third-quarter earnings and positive distribution announcements fueled a rally across the midstream sector, lifting the Alerian Energy Infrastructure ETF (ENFR) and the Alerian MLP ETF (AMLP).
October Gains Fueled by Earnings and Oil Prices
The broad midstream segment gained 10.2% for the month via the ENFR fund. The MLP-focused AMLP advanced 4.2%. A 15.2% rise in U.S. oil prices and robust quarterly earnings at month-end were key drivers. Most midstream companies beat analyst consensus estimates. MPLX LP (MPLX) raised its distribution by 12.5%, reinforcing positive sentiment.
As of November 4, AMZI offered an attractive yield of 7.3%. AMEI is yielding 4.9%. The solid performance came after a period of market uncertainty tied to interest rate changes.
Earnings Beats and Distribution Growth Drive Rebound
Energy infrastructure companies reported solid third-quarter results, strengthening the segment as the year neared its end. Reports from late October mostly topped expectations. Capital returns to shareholders also played a major role. MPLX increased its quarterly distribution by 12.5%. Cheniere Energy (LNG) raised its dividend by 13.6%.
Both MLPs and the broader midstream segment outperformed the broader U.S. market in October. The rally was part of a wider energy stock advance, supported by strong earnings and climbing oil prices.
ENFR, which tracks the Alerian Midstream Energy Select Index (AMEI), climbed 10.2% during the month. AMLP, tracking the Alerian MLP Infrastructure Index (AMZI), rose 4.2%. ENFR remains the lowest-fee ETF in its category. AMLP is the largest MLP ETF available to investors.
Top Performers in Energy Infrastructure ETFs
In the AMLP fund, Plains All American Pipeline (PAA) was the greatest contributor, returning 13.5%. Other top performers included Waterbridge Infrastructure (WBI), up 9.5%, Cheniere Energy Partners LP (CQP), up 9.5%, and Suburban Propane Partners (SPH), up 9.3%.
Within ENFR, Cheniere Energy Inc (LNG) led all constituents, jumping 22.8%. Venture Global Inc (VG) rose 17.0%. Targa Resources Corp (TRGP) also climbed 17.0%. NextDecade Corp (NEXT) gained 16.2%, and Pembina Pipeline (PPL:TSE) advanced 15.0%.
Additional portfolio companies released positive results in early November. However, these gains were overshadowed by broader market volatility following the election, which included a sharp drop in oil prices on November 4.
With AMEI yielding 4.9% and AMZI yielding 7.3% as of early November, both strategies continue to offer significant income potential alongside future upside.
