Newport music venue gets expansion approval
Le Pub, a community-run music venue in Newport’s city centre, is set to expand its operations after receiving planning permission to convert its upper floors into an arts venue and studios. The venue, also known as Le Public Space, has been a staple of the city’s music scene for many years.
Music Venue Properties, a charitable benefit society, purchased the building and has been working to improve and protect the UK’s grassroots music venues. Matthew Otridge, the organization’s representative, expressed delight at the planning permission, stating that it is an important first step in making the expansion a reality.
The expansion plans include turning the first, second, and third floors into an arts venue and studios, as well as adding a roof terrace. The project has received support from Newport Council and the Welsh Government through the Transforming Towns Fund.
Councillor James Clarke, Newport City Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and business growth, praised the city’s cultural offer, including its lively grassroots music scene. He noted that Le Pub has been a valuable asset to the city centre, attracting musicians and audiences for a long time.

Siân Gwenllian, Welsh government cabinet minister for local government, housing and planning, also expressed support for the expansion plans. She stated that the project is a great example of how targeted investment in town and city centres can help protect valued community spaces while giving them room to grow.
As the project moves forward, Music Venue Properties will continue to work with its partners, including Newport Council and the management team at Le Pub, to make the expansion a reality. They are dedicated to protecting and improving the UK’s grassroots music venues, and the expansion of Le Pub is a significant step towards achieving this goal.
