Rhug Estate Supports Veterans’ Christmas Dinners with Mountain Climb
Rhug Estate is backing a 16,800ft mountain initiative aimed at delivering Christmas dinners to homeless and vulnerable veterans throughout Wales. Dr. Richard Mottershead, a Professor of Nursing from Llangynhafal, plans to tackle Mount Ararat in Turkey to generate funds for Adferiad’s Change Step service supporting veterans.
This will be the third year in a row that Rhug Estate, located near Corwen, provides its award-winning meat for the holiday meals. The Drovers Arms pub in Rhewl, close to Ruthin, has volunteered to cook the dishes.
Every Donation Counts
Richard is personally financing the climb so that every donated penny will directly fund Christmas dinners for up to 50 veterans assisted by Change Step.

This follows Richard’s fundraising ascent of Mount Halgurd in Iraqi Kurdistan the prior year, during which Rhug likewise donated provisions for the Christmas meals initiative.
Personal Significance
Richard’s latest trek carries added personal meaning. He has been granted a full PhD scholarship by the Government of Iraq and is conducting a global research project examining migration, mental health, and wellbeing.
Turkey was the initial nation to back the study via Professor Dr. Yasemin Buran Cirak of Istinye University. Professor Buran Cirak advocated for a compassionate international study but died unexpectedly this year. Richard will dedicate his climb up Mount Ararat to her legacy, her family, and her colleagues.
